Easy green wins

Increasingly organisers are being asked to justify their events in terms of environmental impact. If you’re keen to do everything you can to make yours as planet-friendly as possible here are some simple ways you can boost your event’s green credentials. Some of them could even save you money, too.

Paper

Rather than just reduce the amount of paper your event uses, why not aim to go completely paper free? First off, make sure you communicate your goal with your guests and give them the tools to help you. It’s important, if you’re holding a meeting or a conference, your speakers also agree to do their bit. This means all correspondence needs to go electronic, including notes from the talks. If you provide an event-app that allows guests to create personalised schedules, take notes and swap contacts, you’ll be giving your delegates the means to support your environmental stance. Here at Arsenal we have relationships with a few recommended developers who we can put you in touch with to create a tailor-made app for your event.

Catering

Check with your venue about what guidelines their caterers use when sourcing produce. The Red Tractor logo is a good indication of a company that sources responsibly, but it’s always worth asking what other efforts your potential caterers use to reduce their food miles and to use environmentally-friendly ingredients. Food and drink is one of the areas in which we at Arsenal have really concentrated our green efforts. We offer clients purified, fruit-infused water at their events to cut back on the packaging involved in bottled beverages, we compost all food waste and we are part of an initiative to grow food onsite, on the Emirates Stadium roof.

Recycling

Find out which materials your venue recycles and also if they have a scheme to minimise and re-appropriate leftover food. If the venue has nothing in place, see if you can source a local charity that could help find a good home for your catering waste. All of our spaces have facilities for organisers and their guests to recycle paper, glass and plastic and our operations staff make sure they lead by example and also recycle their waste.

Corporate gifts

If you’re giving goodie bags away at the end of the day, try and source something that could also benefit the planet. Branded packets of seeds, cycling equipment, recycled water bottles or coffee cups. There are lots of creative ways to give something back to your delegates and the planet.

Location and Transport

Choosing a venue near to where your guests are going to be traveling from and ensuring good public transport links is a good start to keeping down the carbon footprint as people travel to your event. Arsenal is a short walk away from four tube stations that mean guests are just minutes from central London and St Pancras International.

Offsetting carbon emissions

There are loads of things you can do to help neutralise the impact your event has on the environment. There are companies that calculate your event’s carbon footprint and suggest ways in which it can be offset by donating to projects such as planting trees in Brazil, providing cookware for poor communities in Uganda, helping to build wind power stations in China…

Energy efficiency of the building

New buildings and purpose-built centres are likely to be more efficient in terms of energy ratings as their heating and air conditioning units will be more economical and the buildings themselves will be better at staying cool in summer and warm in winter. With energy-saving initiatives, like using eco LED light bulbs, Emirates Stadium managed to reduce its energy usage by a huge 10% last year.

Holding a green event at Arsenal

We hold hundreds of meetings, conferences, parties, exhibitions and weddings at The Emirates Stadium every year. We’re used to working closely with organisers to ensure all events reach their environmental targets, so give our venue team a call on 0345 262 0004 to discuss your plans.
